The honor of being the first enlisted man ever chosen to represent the United States Army on an exploring expedition has fallen to Staff Sergeant Benjamin Roth of the Sixty-first Aero Squadron of the United States Army Air Service. He has been designated by the War Department to join Commander Byrd’s Anarctic Expedition and will leave, with the Commander’s party on Oct. 1.

Sergeant Roth, who has been in the army fourteen years, is an expert on air-cooled airplane motors.

A dinner was given in his honor last night by the Freeport Lodge of the Elks, of which he is a member.
