Following two hearings on the proposal, the State Board of Health yesterday denied the application for the establishment of the Deborah Sanitarium in Hopatcong Borough, by the Deborah Jewish ConSumptive Relief Society. This action was taken despite the fact that ground-breaking ceremonies were held about three months ago.
William A. Dolan who represented the borough contended that it was a popular summer resort with millions of dollars invested and the proposed sanitarium would lessen property values. Among other reasons cited by opponents of the plan was one to the effect that the State Department of Conservation and Development was going ahead with plans for making a public park a short distance from the proposed sanitarium site.
Tax Commissioner Louis A. Fast of Newark, an officer of the society and Milton M. Unger, also of Newark, who gave the site for the new hospital, urged that the permit be granted. Mr. Fast assured the health board that everything would be taken care of in the way of sanitation and safeguarding the public.
