Jewish leaders of Manchester, following a meeting held last night, decided to secure legal advice as to the measures that they can take to curb the growth of anti-Semitic acts.
Although the acts directed against the Jewish community are not conducted on a large scale and are confined to a small group of agitators, they have proved persistent and noisy and have caused damage.
Bricks, wrapped in paper carrying the labels: “Down with the Jews!” “Perish Judaea!” have been hurled through the windows of the Talmud Torah and the Talmudical College. A similar incident occurred in a Jewish home where a woman lay dangerously ill.
Labels, carrying the same inscriptions, have been posted outside homes of prominent Jews. The home of Nathan Laski, president of the Jewish Community, had such a poster attached.
The Manchester press devotes considerable space to these incidents which are condemned.
Anti-Semitic incidents have been recurrent in Manchester for some time. Last November, the “Manchester Daily Express” referred to the attempt to stir up anti-Semitism in the industrial sections of England.
Labels carrying insulting references to the Jews are distributed at open air meetings, plastered on walls and public buildings, the paper declared. It condemned these efforts which it termed “silly reminiscences of the Middle Ages.”
