The entire property of Hugo Artner, Jewish merchant of Stuttgart, Germany, was confiscated by the Nazi authorities. Mr. Artner and his wife are now in London.
The excuse used by the Nazis was that Mr. Artner had been illegally and secretly exporting capital. According to the regulations now in force in Germany it is forbidden to send any money above a specified sum out of the country. A wide net of espionage has been spread over the entire country and informers have been promised large rewards for cases reported to the authorities. When the new regulations were announced foreign observers said that now an opportunity to pay off all old scores had arisen and the Jewish population felt that it was aimed exclusively at them.
Reports received from Germany today indicate that there have been similar cases of the confiscation of Jewish property under the same allegations.
