Although the Nazi bombs that have been wreaking havoc in far-flung parts of Austria have at this writing affected Jewish communities, Jews throughout the country are in a state of trepidation over the latest terror campaign of the Hitler sympathizers.
During the last burst of bombings loosed by the Nazis, the Jews were singled out for special attention. Jewish cafes were wrecked in Vienna, Jewish stores were damaged and more than a score of Jews received wounds ranging from light to serious.
With the memories of those outrages still fresh in their minds, residents of Jewish neighborhoods in Vienna and the outlying cities are fearfully anticipating a renewed attack directed against them.
The latest series of bomb attacks came as if in direct defiance of the warning sounded by Chancellor Dollfuss yesterday that anybody caught with explosives in his possession would be visited with the death penalty. A few hours after the announcement had been broadcast throughout the country, the bombings began. In Salzburg, five persons were injured when a bomb demolished an automobile reported owned by a member of the Dollfuss “Fatherland Front” organization. Four of the wounded were tourists. From Buers, in Western Austria, it was reported that a bomb had damaged a priest’s home.
