A special Jewish committee has been formed in Poland to cooperate with the secret representative of the Polish Government who recently reached there to unify the activities of the underground movement, it is reliably reported here today. The committee, which is composed of representatives of all the leading Jewish parties of pre-war Poland will furnish guidance to the Jewish underground fighters.
At the same time, the Polish Government here received secret information today confirming that a large-scale battle was waged in the Warsaw ghetto on April 19, when the Germans attempted to wipe out the remnants of the Jewish population there. A message from Jewish underground leaders, dated April 13, which was received today by Samuel Zygelboim, one of the two Jewish members of the Polish National Council, states that the Germans have transferred the workshops which they had established in the ghetto to the execution camps at Prawinki and another unnamed location, in order to remove as many centers of potential resistance as possible.
The message adds that the ghetto in the city of Stanislawow has been completely liquidated and confirms an earlier report that no more than ten percent of the pre-war Jewish population of Poland remains alive. It reiterates previous demands for assistance, asserting that the underground movement “will continue to fight until the last.”
