Hearings before the House Foreign Affairs Committee today on a joint resolution asking establishment of a commission to coordinate efforts to assist the Jews of Europe – which is sponsored by the Emergency Committee to Save the Jewish People of Europe – were utilized by Chairman Sol Bloom to query Peter Bergson, co-chairman of the group concerning his personal status and to criticize the Committee.
Bloom questioned Bergson concerning his status as an alien and then proceeded to attack the Committee for a telegram it had sent to 200 persons appealing for funds to “force” passage of the bill. Bloom indicated that he considered the resolution superfluous since the United States is doing all it can to rescue the Jews. it is expected that Bergson will have an opportunity to testify concerning the bill itself at tomorrow’s hearing.
