The Palestine Jewish community will fight all searches for arms “aimed at taking the last means of defense away from the Jews,” it was stated here today by Moshe Shertok, political chief of the Jewish Agency, speaking at funeral services on the premises of the Jewish Agency for Shmuel Wolynetz, who died yesterday from injuries suffered when police raided the colony of Ramath Hakovesh last week in a search for hidden arms.
It was disclosed today that Mr. Shertok saw High Commissioner Harold MacMichael on Nov. 18, two days after the raid on Ramath Hakovesh, to discuss the situation with him. No information as to what transpired at their meeting has been made public. Today the Agency political head saw Chief Secretary J.V.M. Shaw.
The city of Tel Aviv, where there has been a great deal of unrest since the raid on the Jewish settlement was quiet today. Residents observed a two-minute period of silence in honor of Wolynetz at the suggestion of the municipal council.
Following the recital of Kaddish by Chief Rabbi Uziel at the Jewish Agency building, Wolynetz’ body was taken to Ramath Hakovesh where burial took place, with thousands of persons from all over Palestine in attendance. Leaders of the Histadruth and other groups spoke.
Chief Rabbi Isaac Herzog visited the colony yesterday and also went to the hospital where several of the settlers are still confined. A reliable informant told the Jewish Telegraphic Agency that 35 colonists were arrested during the raid.
