One thousand to 1,200 Jews and Russians were murdered on the British channel island of Alderney, residents of the isle, which was the last territory in western Europe to be liberated, disclosed today.

The Jews and Russians were used for forced labor, they said, and many succumbed from overwork, lack of food and constant beatings. One grave on the island is reported to hold the bodies of 300 of the slave laborers. It is expected that members of the German garrison will be compelled to unearth the bodies.
