The American Jewish Trade Union Committee for Palestine, which includes millions of American workers–both AFL and CIO– today issued a memorandum calling upon the leaders of the United Nations to act immediately on the Palestine question.
The memorandum demands abolishment “without further delay of all restrictions on free Jewish immigration into Palestine and all limitations on the right of Jews to purchase and settle the land;” and issuance of “a definitive announcement, in the spirit and purpose of the Balfour Declaration and the Mandate, of the determination to reconstitute Palestine as a free and democratic Jewish Commonwealth.”
The document, which was submitted to President Truman, Secretary of State Byrnes and the members of both Houses of Congress, reviews the achievements of Jewish Palestine during the last twenty-five years, and emphasizes that American and British labor “have been resolute in their demand for a repudiation of the 1939 White Paper policy and for an honest fulfillment of the pledges made to the Jews in the Balfour Declaration and in the Palestine mandate.” The repeatedly expressed position of labor on this question “is but a firmer expression of a general American attitude voiced by the public at large and by American statemen and legislators,” the memorandum adds.
