The action of the University of Alabama in eliminating from a correspondence course offered to civilian extension students anti-Semitic excerpts from “America Comes of Age” by Andre Siegfried, French writer, was hailed today by the Southeastern regional office of the Anti-Defamation League of B’nai B’rith, which was instrumental in having the anti-Jewish material removed.
The course was purchased from the university by the United States Armed Forces Institute and sent to over 2,000 servicemen before presence of the Siegfried notations was discovered. It was subsequently withdrawn by the institute after protests had been made to the War and Navy departments. Following disclosure of the contents of the USAFI course, representatives of the Anti-Defamation League conferred with University officials, as a result of which the material was deleted.
(In Washington, Red Cross headquarters told the Jewish Telegraphic Agency that an official of the organization who is leaving for Paris this week will investigate why M. Siegfried was invited to lecture before American soldiers and sailors at Red Cross club in the French capital, which was revealed, this week, by the JTA.
