A gift of $2,000,000 from Leon Shimkin, Jewish philanthropist and publishing executive, to the New York University capital fund was announced yesterday by Dr. James M. Hester, university president.

Dr. Hester said that the university would modernize its School of Commerce Building in lower Manhattan and name it Shimkin Hall, for use as a classroom and office building. Mr. Shimkin, president of Simon & Schuster, Inc., studied as a young man in the building to be named for him.
