The United Jewish Welfare Fund-Israel Emergency Fund reached the $12.5 million mark as it prepared to end its second full month and to welcome Simcha Dinitz, Israel’s new ambassador to the United States. Irwin H Goldenberg, general chairman, announced the figure and at the same time urged volunteers to make every effort to reach the 27,000 persons who had given last year but have not yet made in 1973 commitment.
The dinner to honor Ambassador Dinitz will be May 2. It is expected to be attended by approximately 1500 persons who have already, or are expected to, make gifts of $1000 or more. The dinner will be the campaign’s major fundraising event of the drive to date. Dinitz will be making his first West Coast public appearance at the dinner. In an address to the group, he is expected to speak not only about Israel’s role in world affairs, but about the relations that exist between Israel and the United States.
In advance of Yom Hashoah, Jews in Kishinev commemorated the 70th anniversary of the first Kishinev program last week in the synagogue courtyard, it was reported to the Greater New York Conference on Soviet Jewry. Throughout the observance participants stressed their determination that similar events must never occur again. It was reported to the Conference that there was no interference during the memorial observance.
